What Are the IIMs?

The Indian Institutes of Management (IIMs) are India’s premier management education institutions, established by the Government of India to cultivate leadership excellence. Beginning with IIM Calcutta and IIM Ahmedabad in 1961, followed by IIM Bangalore in 1973, the IIM network has expanded to 21 institutes across India today. These autonomous institutions operate under the IIM Act of 2017, which grants them significant academic and administrative freedom.

Educational Excellence

IIMs are renowned for their rigorous admission process, with acceptance rates often below 0.5% for flagship programs. The institutions offer diverse education from post-graduate management programs to doctoral studies and executive education. Their case-based pedagogy, world-class faculty, and industry connections create learning environments that foster analytical thinking, leadership skills, and business acumen.

Global Significance

The IIM system plays a critical role in India’s economic development by:

  • Training business leaders who drive corporate growth across sectors
  • Contributing research that shapes business practices and economic policy
  • Building global management thought leadership from an Asian perspective
  • Fostering entrepreneurship ecosystems that create jobs and innovation

Singapore, as Asia’s leading financial and business hub, has benefited significantly from IIM talent, with many alumni holding leadership positions in finance, technology, and multinational corporations. This relationship strengthens the strategic economic and cultural ties between Singapore and India.
