The first ever Pan IIM Quiz contest was held on November 7th digitally. It boasted impressive numbers of contestants eager to display an incredible amount of information about events that no one really cares about. The traditional IIMs (A, B, C, L) were represented by their alumni and the newer IIMs (K, I) joined hands (after washing them of course) to form a PanIIM team along with members from A, B and C.
Despite the fact that at no point in our lives have we stared at screens for so long, response among the alumni population was strong even to turn up as audience for the digital finals. There were more than 100 alumni along with their families who had registered to be the audience and vie for the audience prizes which were meal vouchers (thanks to our sponsors Yantra and their associates Brunetti & Metta). So, Keynes was wrong, there was indeed a free lunch for the winners.
The teams themselves congregated physically in groups of 5 within the norms prescribed by the Singapore administration and competed against each other via Zoom. The contest itself was closely fought and we had a photo finish (as you would expect with a digital event). The IIMA team and the young Turks from the Pan IIM team were locked together neck and neck like a pair of kissing Giraffes though for the record, neither of the teams really kissed each other. Finally, it had to be resolved by a tie breaker which the Pan IIM team won by the skin of their teeth, which for the trivia buffs is also known as “Gums”.

Congratulations to winners from the PanIIM team – the ‘Farrago Quizzers’ Ajit Nayak (PGP ’95 IIMC), Ashish Saksena (PGP’98 IIMA), Yagni (PGP’2012 IIMI), and Utkarsh (PGP 2014, IIMK). Also, to the runners up – the IIMA Avengers who got pipped at the post – Aniruddha Ganguly (PGP’98), Niloy Mukherjee (PGP’92), Amit Gupta (PGP’90), Milind Yedkar (PGP’86), and Ritoban Banerjee (PGP 2007)
A special thanks to our Quizmaster Rahul Phondke (IIMA ’95), and Rajeev Rai (IIMA ‘95) who had set most of the questions and kept score and also added useful factoids. We look forward to making this feature an annual event and hope that it is events like these which can bring the community together in a competitive but a friendly way and cheer us up, a sentiment which all of us can do with more, in these times.
